West Virginia Rock Supply handles bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across West Virginia. Crusher run is the base this state builds on, and it is the material to start with when a drive, a pad or a shop floor has to hold a grade.

Most of West Virginia sits on thin, stony soil over sandstone, shale and siltstone. That ground moves water fast, and it punishes a base that was sized by eye.

Order by the job. A driveway, a patio and a drain each want a different stone, and the local names are the ones that get you the right load.

Crusher run is crushed stone with the fines left in, so it locks up tight under a roller and holds a grade on a hillside drive. West Virginia yards sell it by top size: 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and coarser.

Base courses are specified locally by the WVDOH Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges. Section 307 covers crushed aggregate base course and takes its material requirement from Subsection 704.6, which grades base and subbase aggregate by numbered class in Table 704.6.2A, with Class 10 footnoted as crusher run material only.

Class 1 base is the heavier of the two crusher run classes, for drives, parking pads, shop floors and slabs, and for building up over soft ground or old fill.

Class 2 base is the finer class, used where a drive or pad wants a tighter surface and as a top course over a Class 1 base.

Local quarries list #67 Stone as a 3/4 inch clean washed stone for drainage beds and bedding where #57 is a shade too big.

For tight work there is #89 Crushed Stone and 3/8" Crushed Stone. Stone Screenings bed pavers, flagstone and brick and fill the joints.

Decorative and yard work runs on River Rock, Large River Rock and 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel. Mason Sand covers brick and block work.

Ground and Climate Across West Virginia

Slope failure is the driver here. The Cumberland Plateau coalfields run about 4.6 landslides per square mile, with 3.6 across the central Allegheny Plateau and 2.8 in the eastern mountains.

That failure concentrates in shale and siltstone residuum, colluvium and mine regolith on slopes steeper than about 14 to 21 degrees. Creek bank scour after heavy rain, washouts on cut and fill, and sinkhole collapse in the karst valleys make up the rest.

The Eastern Panhandle limestone valley has deep, cherty clay over limestone and dolostone, with rock often shallow and solution channels running through it. Frost there is set by the county or municipal building official, and nearby jurisdictions commonly work to about 30 inches.

The Potomac ridges and valleys run long sandstone ridges with shaly, stony residual soil, shallow and full of rock fragments. The Allegheny highlands carry thin, acid, very stony soil over sandstone and shale, with boulder fields and wet organic ground in the flat mountain basins.

The Greenbrier limestone valley is deep red and cherty clay over a sinkhole plain that is hollow underneath. In the coalfields, flat ground is scarce and much of what is flat is fill.

The Kanawha valley is river terrace sand, gravel and silt, backed immediately by steep hillsides. Charleston sits at about 24 inches of frost under the city building department's figure.

The Ohio Valley and Northern Panhandle hold terrace sand and gravel along the river, with old industrial fill on some flats. Morgantown runs about 30 inches under the city ordinance, and the highlands are likely deeper.

Base, driveway and paver work runs from spring into late fall almost everywhere, longest in the Eastern Panhandle and the Ohio and Kanawha valleys and shortest in the highlands. Long wet spells stop more jobs than cold does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in West Virginia

When is the best time of year to order base material in West Virginia?

Base, driveway and paver work runs from spring into late fall almost everywhere in the state. The season is longest in the Eastern Panhandle and the Ohio and Kanawha valleys, and shortest in the highlands. Long wet spells stop more jobs than cold does, so plan around the wet weeks rather than the cold ones.

What is the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?

Topsoil is screened soil for lawns, grading and bed prep over thin, stony hillside ground. Fill dirt is bulk fill for raising grade, filling a washout or backfilling behind a wall, and it goes in before a base course on top. Use topsoil where something has to grow, and fill where something has to be brought up to grade.

What is crusher run and what is it used for in West Virginia?

Crusher run, also called crush and run, is crushed stone with the fines left in, so it locks up tight under a roller and holds a grade on a hillside drive. It is the everyday West Virginia base and drive material. Local quarries sell it by top size, 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and coarser.
