Bulk Gravel and Stone Delivery in Clay County, WV
West Virginia Rock Supply brings gravel, stone and aggregate delivery in Clay County, WV to drives, pads and building sites from Wallback to Ivydale. Work here runs most of the year, held up by long wet spells rather than by cold.
Crusher run is the everyday material on this ground. Crushed stone with the fines left in, it locks up tight under a roller and holds a grade on a hillside drive.
Materials Delivered in Clay County
Crusher run is the base term in West Virginia. Local quarries sell it by top size, 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and coarser, and it goes down as the base and wearing surface on drives, parking pads and shop floors.
West Virginia base material is specified by the WVDOH Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges. Section 307 covers crushed aggregate base course and takes its material requirement from Subsection 704.6, which grades base and subbase aggregate by numbered class in Table 704.6.2A.
Class 10 is footnoted as crusher run material only.
Two crusher run classes cover most base work. Class 1 Base is the heavier course under drives, pads and slabs, and the layer to build up when the subgrade is soft ground or old fill.
Crusher Run in its finer Class 2 form gives a tighter surface than the coarse base, and works as a top course over a Class 1 base.

Ground Conditions Across Clay County
Across the Allegheny Plateau coalfields, the ground is steep hillsides of acid, stony residuum over sandstone, shale and coal measures. Deep colluvium sits in the hollows and narrow alluvial strips run along the creek bottoms.
Mine spoil and regolith lie on and below the old workings and benches. Flat ground is scarce, and much of what is flat is fill.
Narrow hollows shape the drainage. Rain off long, steep slopes funnels into one creek and one road, so a drive takes runoff gathered from well uphill.
Culverts and ditches decide how that water leaves. Old mine workings add their own discharges, and acid mine drainage from abandoned mines has left hundreds of miles of stream here running acid, which is hard on metal pipe and on anything set in the water.
This is the most landslide-prone ground in the state. LiDAR mapping counts about 4.6 slides per square mile in the Cumberland Plateau coalfields, nearly all on slopes steeper than about 21 degrees.
Mine regolith is the single most slide-prone material, and shale and siltstone units are the most susceptible rock. Unreclaimed workings, timber cutting, road cuts and sidecast fill are the usual triggers, and creek banks scour hard in a flash rise.
A thin base shows its failure at the first wet spell. Saturated hillside fill will not compact, so it should not be built on until it drains.
Frost depth is set by the county or municipal building official. The nearest published West Virginia figures run about 24 to 30 inches, so confirm the local one.
Choosing the Right Material
Kanawha County spans more than one zone, with a valley floor and Allegheny Plateau coalfields ground. That mix of flat valley bottom and steep slope changes how a base is built and where drainage has to go.
Roane County and Calhoun County sit on the same ground region as Clay County: rolling to steep dissected hill country on shale, siltstone and sandstone. The base and drainage reasoning carries across.
