Add your project measurements
One cubic yard fills a cube 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk products are purchased by cubic yard or ton, so you need to turn the size of your project into one of those measures. These calculators make that conversion for 24 listed materials using each material's actual weight per cubic yard. Shredded mulch is about 600 lb per yard, while crusher run is 3,000 lb per yard. They occupy the same cube, but crusher run weighs five times more. That is why tonnage can be off when using a general aggregate calculator.

How the calculation is figured
First find the volume: multiply the length and width in feet, then multiply by the depth in feet. To convert inches to feet, divide by 12. That result is cubic feet. Divide it by 27 to get cubic yards, then use the material density to determine tons. The calculators handle those steps from the measurements you enter.
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)
A good area measurement can still lead to a wrong estimate if the depth is guessed. A 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches takes half the stone required at 4 inches. If you need a starting point, each material page shows depths suited to its intended projects.

Choosing material for the work
- For a new driveway or parking pad, put crusher run or road base below and driveway gravel or #57 stone above. Estimate each of the two layers separately.
- For standing water, a wet trench or a French drain, use clean #57 or drain rock at a depth of 12 inches or more.
- Use shredded mulch around plantings. Choose river rock for a border that does not need regular refreshing.
- For bare or sparse grass, spread 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before adding seed or sod.
- Build up a low area or fill a hole with fill dirt, then use topsoil only for the upper 4 to 6 inches.
- A paver patio needs compacted base beneath 1 inch of bedding sand. The Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators let you estimate those layers separately.
- For playground fall areas, maintain pea gravel at a depth of 9 to 12 inches.
- For a creek bank or shoreline that is washing away, install riprap over fabric in 12-inch-plus layers.
