Open gaps are part of its purpose, so it should not be expected to make a packed road finish.
On shale slopes and in steep hollows, catch seepage above the drive and direct it across in a pipe before it reaches the stone. Place this material below the travel course, where it can drain and support the road. Moderate frost adds seasonal movement to wet ground. This is especially practical around the New River Gorge and the Kanawha Valley, where hillside water can appear after rain. It also fits ditch and slope erosion control when runoff concentrates.
