Open the calculatorWest Virginia Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Davy, WV for two kinds of buyers: contractors building drives, pads and flatwork, and homeowners patching a washout or bedding a patio. Crusher run is the local name for the base material most of that work starts from.
Ground here is steep, stony hillside over sandstone, shale and coal measures, so flat ground is scarce and much of what is flat is fill. That shapes what you order and how much of it.
Across the Allegheny Plateau coalfields, the ground is acid, stony residuum over sandstone, shale and coal measures. Deep colluvium sits in the hollows and narrow alluvial strips run along the creek bottoms.
Mine spoil and regolith cover the old workings and benches. On ground like that, a thin base course fails early: the surface breaks up, ruts hold water, and the edges start to creep.
The fix is a heavier base built up before any surface stone goes down. Where the subgrade is soft ground or old fill, that means a coarse base course rather than a thin layer of fines.
This is also the most landslide-prone ground in the state. LiDAR mapping counts about 4.6 slides per square mile in the Cumberland Plateau coalfields, nearly all on slopes steeper than about 21 degrees.
Mine regolith is the most slide-prone material mapped, and shale and siltstone the most susceptible rock. Unreclaimed workings, timber cutting, road cuts and sidecast fill are the usual triggers, and creek banks scour hard in a flash rise.
Rain off long, steep slopes funnels into one creek and one road. A drive takes runoff gathered from well uphill, so culverts and ditches decide how the surface holds up.
Old mine workings add their own discharges, and acid mine drainage from abandoned mines has left hundreds of miles of stream here running acid. That is hard on metal pipe and on anything set in the water, so drainage stone and pipe bedding need thought.
Work runs most of the year, held up by long wet spells rather than by cold. Saturated hillside fill will not compact and should not be built on until it drains.
Winters are moderate in the hollows and colder on the ridges, with repeated freeze-thaw and the worst drive damage showing during the spring thaw. Frost depth is set by the county or municipal building official, so confirm the local figure before footing work.
Bedding under pavers and flatwork is where the choice of material shows up first. A paver or slab sits on what you put under it, and the wrong bedding lets the surface rock, settle or hold water at the joints.
Stone Screenings, also called screenings or stone dust, are the crusher fines used to bed pavers, flagstone and brick and to fill the joints between them. West Virginia yards sell them under several names, so ask for screenings or stone dust rather than a spec number.
Washed Sand, also called concrete sand, is the coarser washed sand for levelling and bedding under slabs and pavers. It is a different material from mason sand and does a different job.
Mason Sand is the finer sand for brick and block work, paver joints and play boxes. It is the one to specify when mortar or a tight joint is the point.
Under all of that sits the base. Crusher Run, also called crush and run or 3/4 inch crusher run, is crushed stone with the fines left in, so it locks up tight under a roller and holds a grade on a hillside drive.
Local quarries sell it by top size: 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and coarser.
Class 1 Base is the heavier base course for drives, parking pads, shop floors and slabs, and the layer to build up when the subgrade is soft ground or old fill. West Virginia yards sell it as the coarser of the two crusher run classes.
Class 2 base is the finer crusher run class, used where a drive or pad wants a tighter surface than the coarse base gives, and as a top course over a Class 1 base. Note that Class 2 also names a riprap weight class, so say which one you mean.
For drainage and flatwork edges, #57 Limestone is washed 1 inch clean stone for French drains, pipe bedding, concrete work and construction entrances. #8 Limestone is the small washed chip, roughly 3/8 inch down to 1/4 inch, for paver joints, pipe bedding and fine drainage.
Clean stone drains; crusher run compacts. Keep the two jobs separate and the base will hold.
Davy sits in McDowell County, and delivery covers the surrounding county as well, including Welch, War, Raysal, Northfork and Iaeger.
You order online, choose a quantity by the ton or by the yard, and pick a delivery date at checkout. Each product page has a calculator if you want to size the load before you order.
A dump truck tips the load in one pile on site. Steep hollow drives and narrow creek-bottom strips are worth a look before the truck arrives, because where the pile lands is where the material stays.
Size your load with the calculator on the product page, then order online by the ton or the yard and pick a delivery date at checkout. West Virginia Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, stone, sand and topsoil across Davy and McDowell County, tipped on site and ready to work.
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Davy, WV
Crusher run is the base and drive material here, sold by top size as 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and coarser. It carries the fines that let it lock up and hold a grade on a hillside. Where the subgrade is soft ground or old fill, build up with Class 1 base first, then top with the finer Class 2 crusher run for a tighter surface.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator to size the load. Have your area and the depth you intend to build to ready before you use it. Steep ground and soft fill both change how far a load goes, so measure the actual footprint rather than estimating from the drive length.
Place the order with the date you want and we confirm the delivery window back to you. Give us as much notice as you can for Davy so you get the slot you want rather than the one that is left, and tell us up front if the site is only reachable at certain times.
