Buy #57 Limestone in Helvetia, WV

West Virginia Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Helvetia, WV, and the working season here is the shortest in the state. Base, drive and paver work waits for the ground to thaw and drain in late spring, then stops earlier in the fall than it does downstate.

Crusher run is the everyday base and drive material for this ground. On steep, shallow soil over rock, water cannot soak in, so it runs.

Materials for Helvetia Projects

Base and driveway surfacing starts the list. Crusher run, also called crush and run, is crushed stone with the fines left in, so it locks up under a roller and holds a grade on a hillside drive.

It is sold by top size, 3/4 inch and 1-1/2 inch and coarser.

Class 1 base is the heavier base course under drives, parking pads, shop floors and slabs. Build up with it when the subgrade is soft ground or old fill.

Class 2 is the finer crusher run class, used where a drive or pad wants a tighter surface and as a top course over a Class 1 base.

• Crusher Run for drive and base work on a hillside grade.
• Class 1 Base for the heavier layer under drives and pads.
• Driveway Gravel for surfacing an existing drive or topping a compacted base.
• Riprap for creek and hollow banks, culvert outlets and toe protection under a slipping fill.

Washed stone handles water. #57 Limestone is a washed 1 inch clean stone for drainage, French drains, pipe bedding and construction entrances.

#8 Limestone is a small washed chip, roughly 3/8 inch down to 1/4 inch, for paver joints and fine drainage.

Sand, soil and decorative stone round out a load. Washed sand is the coarser sand for levelling and bedding under slabs and pavers.

Screened topsoil covers lawns and bed prep. River rock and Natural Pea Gravel finish beds, borders and walkways.

Ground and Conditions in Helvetia

Rain and deep snowmelt on steep, shallow soil over rock drive everything here. Water cannot soak in, so it runs, and the mountains take more than 60 inches of precipitation a year, the wettest ground in the state.

Springs and seeps break out partway down a slope. That water runs straight through an undrained base, so a drive on this ground needs drainage before it needs surface.

The soil across the Allegheny highlands and the Allegheny Front is thin, acid and very stony over sandstone and shale on the high plateau, with deep colluvium on the side slopes and bedrock close to the surface on the benches. That is why a base course gets built up rather than cut in.

Slides and slumps show up on slopes over about 17 degrees, in shale and siltstone residuum and in colluvium. Old timber roads, skidder trails and unreclaimed workings add to it, and mountain streams rise hard and fast and scour banks and culvert outlets.

The ground freezes early, thaws late and cycles through freeze-thaw well into spring, which is what tears up a thin gravel drive. Frost depth is set by the county building official, and no state table gives a figure for the highlands, so confirm it locally.
