Ground here is steep, stony and thin, so what sits under a patio matters as much as the pavers on top. Choose the bedding first, then the base beneath it.

Ground and Conditions in Mount Nebo

Across the Allegheny Plateau coalfields the ground runs to acid, stony residuum over sandstone, shale and coal measures. Hollows hold deep colluvium and the creek bottoms carry narrow strips of alluvium.

Flat ground is scarce, and much of what looks flat is fill.

A thin base shows its failure fast on that ground. The surface rocks, the joints open, and water finds the low spot and stays there.

Rain off long, steep slopes funnels into one creek and one road. A patio cut into a hillside takes runoff gathered from well uphill, so the drainage layer under the pavers has to move water rather than hold it.

This is landslide-prone country. Mine regolith is the most slide-prone material and shale and siltstone the most susceptible rock, with road cuts and sidecast fill the usual triggers.

Saturated hillside fill will not compact and should not be built on until it drains, so work waits on long wet spells rather than on cold.

Materials for Mount Nebo Projects

Bedding is the layer that decides whether a patio stays flat. Get it right and the pavers sit tight through freeze-thaw and the spring thaw.

#8 Limestone is the small washed chip, roughly 3/8 inch down to 1/4 inch. It beds pipe, fills fine drainage and dresses over a compacted base, and it is the size that suits tight paver work.

West Virginia yards list it as #8 limestone, and quarries here also sell sandstone under the same size number.

Stone Screenings are the crusher fines, sold locally as screenings or stone dust. They bed pavers, flagstone and brick and fill the joints between them.

Screenings lock up tight, which is what you want under flatwork and not what you want where water has to pass.

Washed Sand is the coarser washed sand for levelling and bedding under slabs and pavers. Mason Sand is finer, for brick and block work and paver joints.

Under all of it goes the base. Crusher Run, also called crush and run, is the everyday West Virginia base and drive material.

Fines stay in the mix, so it locks up tight under a roller and holds a grade. Local quarries sell it by top size, 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and coarser.

Class 1 Base is the heavier base course, the coarser of the two crusher run classes. Use it under drives, parking pads, shop floors and slabs, and to build up where the subgrade is soft ground or old fill.

Class 2 base is the finer class, for a tighter surface or as a top course over Class 1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Mount Nebo, WV

What gravel is best for a driveway in Mount Nebo?

Crusher run is the base for a Mount Nebo drive. It carries the fines that let it lock up and hold a grade on a hillside, and local quarries sell it by top size. Where the subgrade is soft ground or old fill, build up with Class 1 Base first. Top the compacted base with Driveway Gravel for the running surface.

How much material will my project need?

Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Each product page has a calculator to size the load for the area you are covering. Have your measurements ready before you order, then pick a delivery date at checkout. The truck tips the load on site in one pile.

Where will the material be placed?

Wherever you tell us, as long as the truck can safely reach it. Mark the spot before the delivery and someone should be on site to point the driver to it. If nobody can be there, leave clear instructions when you order and we will follow them.
